Frequently Asked Questions

Is there golf directly within Plymouth's city limits?

You won't find any golf courses directly within Plymouth's city boundaries, which might surprise some. While it's a fantastic city for history and maritime adventures, it simply isn't a golf destination in itself. Don't worry though, some excellent courses are just a short drive away.

Where can I play golf near Plymouth?

If you're staying in Plymouth and want to hit the links, you'll need to venture a bit outside the city. We highly recommend heading north to St. Mellion Estate, about 30 minutes away, which boasts two championship courses - the Nicklaus Signature and the Kernow. For a more traditional links feel, try Bigbury Golf Club to the east, offering stunning coastal views and a challenging layout.

What's the best time to visit Plymouth for a golf trip (even if playing nearby)?

For the best golfing conditions at the nearby courses, we always recommend visiting between late spring and early autumn, specifically May through September. You'll generally find drier weather and longer daylight hours, making for more enjoyable rounds. Just be prepared for potential summer crowds, especially on weekends, so book your tee times well in advance.

What else is there to do in Plymouth if I'm not golfing?

Even without golf courses directly in the city, Plymouth offers plenty to keep you entertained. We love exploring the historic Barbican area, visiting the National Marine Aquarium, or taking a boat trip from the Hoe. It's a city rich in naval history and vibrant culture, perfect for non-golfing days or companions.

Is Plymouth a good base for a golf trip to the wider Devon and Cornwall region?

Absolutely, Plymouth makes an excellent base for exploring the wider golf offerings of Devon and Cornwall. You'll find a great selection of hotels, restaurants, and evening entertainment, plus it offers convenient access to top courses like St. Mellion, Yelverton, and even further afield into South Cornwall. Think of it as your comfortable hub before you drive out to those fantastic courses.
