Frequently Asked Questions
When's the best time of year to play The Dunes Golf Course in New Zealand?
We've played The Dunes in various seasons, and for the most enjoyable experience, you'll want to aim for late spring through early autumn (October to April). The weather is generally more settled, offering ideal conditions to appreciate the course's coastal beauty without battling strong winter winds or heavy rain.
What makes The Dunes a unique challenge compared to other New Zealand courses?
The Dunes truly stands out with its authentic links feel, something you don't always find in New Zealand's diverse golf landscape. You'll encounter firm, fast-running fairways and deep pot bunkers that demand precision, especially when the coastal winds pick up. It's a proper test of your short game and strategic thinking.
What are the must-see holes or highlights at The Dunes?
You absolutely can't miss the stretch from the 14th to the 16th - it's pure magic. The par-3 14th, with its green perched above the beach, is a stunner, and the par-5 16th offers a thrilling risk-reward shot over water. These holes perfectly capture the course's dramatic coastal setting and are truly memorable.
Is The Dunes a walkable course, or should I plan on taking a cart?
While it's certainly walkable, we recommend considering a cart if you're not used to undulating terrain or if you want to conserve energy to fully enjoy your round. The course has some significant elevation changes, particularly on the back nine, which can add a bit of a workout to your game.
What's the clubhouse experience like, and is The Dunes good value for money?
The clubhouse is welcoming and unpretentious, offering a relaxed spot to grab a drink and a bite while overlooking the 18th. We think The Dunes offers excellent value; you're getting a genuine links experience with stunning views at a more accessible price point than some of New Zealand's more famous, exclusive courses.
